The Real Reason Your Child Is Bored of School
(And How to Fix It This Summer)
Most parents, teachers, and tutors think that students need to study more, do more homework, or spend more time at school in order to get a good education.
The truth? Your child could be learning and retaining more in fewer hours by engaging in an immersive hands-on experience delivered in a fun and low-stress environment.
This summer, give your child the opportunity to design & build a remote-controlled sun shade working alongside a real engineer, so they can learn & grow in a fun way without any of the stress or boredom of summer school or classes.
đď¸Â DATE: June 9 - Aug 4, 2026
In Just 8 Weeks, Here's What Your Child Will Learn:
𧹠Week 1: Laying The Groundwork
Uncover the truth that we live in the best age there ever was for education. You can learn anything you wantâeven if you're still a teenager! Entrepreneurship and innovation are not limited to experienced adults with college degrees. You'll learn the story of Easton LaChappelle, a teenage entrepreneur who invented an affordable, lightweight robotic arm for people with upper limb deficienciesâall beginning with a prototype made out of Legos!
We'll also order all the materials for the remote-controlled sun shade.
đťÂ Week 2: Control a Motor Using a Microcontroller
This week, you'll learn how to program the âbrainâ of your smart sun shade: the ESP32 microcontroller. We'll explore how computers control motors, sensors, and other electronic devices using code. By the end of class, you'll upload your own program to the ESP32 and successfully control the movement of a stepper motor.
đ¨Â Week 3: Building the Shade Mechanism
Engineering isn't just codingâit's also designing reliable physical systems. This week, students will build the actual roller shade mechanism using shade fabric, rollers, brackets, and a motorized drive system. We'll learn about torque, alignment, mechanical design, and how engineers solve real-world physical problems.
đŻÂ Week 4: Limit Positions + Reliability
Students will program their shade to recognize safe upper and lower limits so it stops automatically without over-rotating. We'll also focus on calibration and reliability to make the system run smoothly and consistently.
đ˛Â Week 5: Designing the Control Interface
What good is a smart device if you can't control it? This week, students will design a simple phone-based app that communicates wirelessly with the ESP32. We'll learn how devices communicate over wireless networks and build a basic webpage with buttons to raise, lower, and stop the shade directly from a smartphone.
đŹÂ Week 6: Housing + CAD
This week introduces students to computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing. Using beginner-friendly CAD software, students will design a custom housing to hold the electronics and motor for their sun shade. We'll discuss how engineers create prototypes, iterate on designs, and manufacture custom parts using 3D printers.
đ Week 7: Final Assembly + Debugging
This week, students will put everything together into a complete working system. We'll assemble the electronics, install the motor housing, connect the control interface, and perform final testing. By the end of class, each student will have a functioning remote-controlled smart sun shade they can demonstrate and continue improving at home.
đťÂ Week 8: Showcase Day
Parents are encouraged to attend the final week of the summer program. Each student will prepare a brief presentation sharing what they built, the challenges they overcame, and what they learned throughout the engineering process. We'll reflect on the fun we had together this summer and explore additional opportunities for students to continue learning, building, and innovating long after the program ends.
What Your Child Will Walk Away With:
â A practical remote-controlled sun shade that your child designed and feels proud of
â Â The ability to program a microcontroller, control an electric motor, & integrate simple wireless control
â  Clarity on how to design a product like a real engineer
â The confidence to design and build something on their own
â Excitement to learn on their own and continue furthering their education
đď¸ Here's How It Works:
đ WHEN:
Live for 8 weeksâTuesday, June 9 thru Tuesday, Aug 4
1.5 hours each Tuesday night (6:30pm to 8:00pm MDT)
đ WHERE:
Online, from anywhere in the world
đ WHO IT'S FOR:
Students/teenagers grades 7-12 (ages 12-18) who are interested in STEM and who want to design & build something this summerâand get ahead in their education
đ Spots Are Limited!
This is your chance for your child to work alongside a real engineer and learn how to design and build a useful product for your home! They'll learn how to program a microcontroller, build a smart app, connect to their device via Bluetooth, and assemble engineering components into a fully functional remote-controlled smart shade.
But here's the kicker:Â there are only 30 spots available!
This is because I want to give each student as much attention as possible throughout the summer experience.
Don't let this opportunity pass by. Act fast!

Meet Your Mentor - Josh Larsen
Hi, I'm Josh Larsenâbiomedical engineer and STEM coach to motivated teens who aspire to make an impact in the world through engineering and innovation. I graduated with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Utah in 2024 and now work full-time as a quality engineer for a world-renowned medical device company.
As the valedictorian of my high school class and a leader among my college peers, I know how tough public education can be. It's easy to get lost in the grades, homework assignments, and exams. However, education is so much more than just earning good grades! We live in the best age the world has ever seen for education! Teenage students can learn anything they wantânow! Yes, that includes your child!
Over the years, I have cultivated a passion for teaching and mentoring others. I spent countless hours patiently mentoring peers in college as a friend and as a paid tutor. I love teaching others and watching them succeed!
I also love designing and building things! Whether it is a functional 3-D printed guitar, a GoPro mount for a ski boat, or home decorations for my wife, I love bringing an idea to life. Now I want to help your child experience the joy of designing & building their very own engineering project!

âĄStop Wasting Away the Summer Scrolling.
Too many teens spend an unhealthy amount of time scrolling on Tik-Tok, evading boredom and suffering from poor mental health. They are losing time that could be spent enriching their life and education through fun and engaging projects.
Imagine seeing your child excited about developing their intellectual skills this summer, spending time learning, designing, and building something few adults know how to build. Watch their mental health improve as they get off social media to join a virtual call with other teens who are smart and have a desire to be different and make a good impact on the world.
This is your chance to make it real.
Join the Become An Engineer Summer Program today and give them the opportunity to transform their summer into an exciting and unique experience filled with innovation, high-value education, and the fulfillment that comes from creating something.
Spots are limited, and once we start, doors close. Secure your seat now and take the first step toward empowering your child's education this summer.
